Day 11 - Albania

So from one beach to another, well that's the plan anyway. Not far to go today with an overnight hotel break.

Coming out of Montenegro on back lanes through the hills, olive groves lined the roads, their musty aroma hung heavy in the air, it was lovely.

Olive groves to the left of me olive groves to the right, here I am

I’d heard that the driving in Albania was something to behold but I’m happy to say that I didn’t see any of it, must've been the sparse rural roads I was on.

Rural Roads

Steep to the sea the unexpected dark sand was scoldingly hot under foot and unpredictable in depth, not the sort of beach you could easily have an evening stroll on but the hundreds of lines of umbrellas being erected was a sign of the summer functionality of it to come. I assume the sand was at least partially volcanic due to its dark hue.

The unpredictable depth sloping beach

What looked to be the idea of a promenade was a never ending slab of pallid tri-coloured concrete, another functional piece of their aspirational resort jigsaw.

The Promenade

The town square was filled with hotels, yet to open supermarkets and closed exchange bureaus, it was also very short on bankomats (ATMs), I only found one in the whole place, thank goodness it worked.

From what I've said you might think I wasn't keen on Albania but that couldn't be further from the truth. I found it's quirkiness quite endearing and interesting. It's a young country on its way forward and I wish it all the very best for the years to come. I hope to go back there someday.

I only spent the afternoon there and was going to use the limited time to try and catch up with blogs, comms and admin. It was very much a resort area, not, I assume, typical Albania and sadly, I didn't see a single bunker the whole time I was there. Go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunkers_in_Albania for more information about the bunkers.
